Bears still on track for finals

30/07/2008 11:05:00 AM
Weston Workers Bears are still in the hunt for a semi-final berth after a crucial 3-1 win over Toronto Awaba last Sunday in the NBN State League.

The victory on home soil at Thomas and Coffey Park has the Bears in fifth position, two points behind third placed Valentine and fourth placed Azzurri FC.

After a quick start in the opening five or six minutes the Bears did appear flat but needless to say the win was needed.

Toronto’s Peter Becklar hit the post shortly after and Rhys Tippett drove over the bar for Weston minutes later when close to goal on an acute angle.

Frustration set in with Toronto desperate and putting plenty of pressure on the Bears with three players being shown the yellow card for various fouls.

Rhys Tippett had a good chance in the 34th minute with only the keeper in Paul Marrone to beat but his shot was saved.

The game shaped up as a match that the first goal scorer was always going to prove very hard to run down.

Andrew Parkinson and Callum Penglaze both had to defuse Toronto’s strikers on goals with the ball being cleared off Weston’s line.

With 12 minutes remaining and the score board attendant still not required a scoreless draw was on the cards.

Jason Cowburn cleverly headed towards goals giving Tippett room in front of him and only Marrone to beat which he did to make it a 1-0 score.

Two minutes later Robert MacBeth burst into the box and was upended which saw referee Aaron Strickland award a penalty. Nathan Morris calmly placed his shot into the net and extended Weston’s lead to a 2-0 advantage.

Toronto pulled one back with three minutes left on the clock when Brendan Dobbie was left unmarked at the back post with an easy finish.

Right on full time Robert MacBeth found space inside the box and had an easy finish to round out the score at 3-1 in Weston’s favour.

Reserve grade have slipped to fifth position, a point behind fourth placed Valentine after having a 2-2 draw with ninth placed Toronto.

After leading 1-0 through Ben O’Neill early on Weston then had to come from behind to level it up after Matthew Philp scored from the penalty spot after Joel Page was upended.

The Under 19’s edged their way off the bottom with a convincing 2-0 win over Toronto and really deserved the win.

Goals to Luke Johnston and Joshua Murphy in the second stanza was enough to get the spoils and the squad celebrated accordingly.

This weekend all Weston’s remaining matches are extremely important and nothing short of victory will do.

Weston travel to Macquarie Field Speers Point to confront Lake Macquarie who are out of semi’s contention but will be no pushover this Sunday.

The two junior teams are at home again with the Under 16’s up against Merewether at 11.15am whilst the Under 14’s play Lambton at 10am on Saturday.

Sunday week will see the Bears play their last preliminary match at home with plenty of action promised against Edgeworth.

Another Old Boys day has been planned with all ex players asked to gather in the Workers Club at noon.

More details will follow up next week as most are still well and truly alive to strive for a semi finals berth in most grades.
